Peripheral Nerve Stimulator (PNS)

Peripheral Nerve Stimulator (PNS)

Advanced Neuromodulation for Chronic Nerve Pain

When nerve pain becomes a constant barrier to your quality of life, and conservative treatments have failed, Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) offers a sophisticated, minimally invasive solution. At Allevia, we utilize this cutting-edge neuromodulation technology to target pain at its source, effectively “scrambling” pain signals before they ever reach your brain.

What is a Peripheral Nerve Stimulator?

Unlike a Spinal Cord Stimulator which targets the central spine, a PNS targets specific individual nerves outside of the spinal cord (peripheral nerves). The system consists of a tiny, hair-thin wire (lead) and a small, wearable or implanted pulse generator.

  • Targeted Relief: The lead is placed directly next to the specific nerve causing your pain—whether it’s in your shoulder, hip, knee, or foot.

  • Interrupting Pain: The device sends mild electrical pulses that replace the sensation of pain with a gentle tingling or, in some cases, no sensation at all.

  • Patient Controlled: You have the power to adjust the intensity of the stimulation using a wireless remote or smartphone app to match your pain levels throughout the day.

Is PNS Right for You?

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation is highly effective for localized nerve pain that has not responded to injections or physical therapy.

Common Conditions Treated:

  • Post-Surgical Pain: Chronic pain following knee, shoulder, or hernia surgery.

  • Neuropathic Pain: Burning or tingling sensations in the extremities.

  • Occipital Neuralgia: Severe chronic headaches originating from the base of the skull.

  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS): Targeted relief for localized limb pain.

  • Nerve Entrapment: Pain caused by specific nerve compression or trauma.

The Two-Step Path to Relief

One of the greatest advantages of PNS is the ability to “test drive” the system before committing to a permanent solution.

  1. The Trial Phase: We place a temporary lead next to the nerve for several days. This allows you to experience the relief in your daily life. If your pain is reduced by 50% or more, the trial is considered a success.

  2. The Permanent Procedure: If the trial is successful, a permanent, minimally invasive system is placed. This is an outpatient procedure that requires only a small incision and no hospital stay.

Benefits of PNS at Allevia

  • Significant Pain Reduction: Many patients experience a dramatic decrease in pain and a restored ability to perform daily tasks.

  • Reduced Opioid Use: By treating pain at the nerve level, many patients are able to lower or eliminate their reliance on oral pain medications.

  • Minimally Invasive: No major surgery or bone removal is required.
